The actions required to setup NetAtalk 3.1 on FreeBSD 10.2

Preparations:

Create user(s) and group(s) for AFP and Time Machine shares

When using zfs

# zfs create zroot/usr/home/shares
# zfs set compression=lz4 zroot/usr/home/shares
# zfs set refquota=800G zroot/usr/home/shares

Create share points for AFP and Time Machine shares

# mkdir /usr/home/shares/afp
# mkdir /usr/home/shares/tm

Adjust access

# chmod 770 /usr/home/shares/afp
# chmod 770 /usr/home/shares/tm

Modify share point ownership

# chgrp afp /usr/home/shares/afp
# chgrp tm /usr/home/shares/tm

Install netltalk

# pkg install netatalk3

Configure

Create /usr/local/etc/afp.conf

Example file

Modify /etc/nssswitch.conf

Change: 'hosts: files dns', to: 'hosts: files dns mdns'

Modify /etc/rc.conf

# Add : 
dbus_enable="YES"
avahi_daemon_enable="YES"
netatalk_enabled="YES"

Start the services

# service dbus start 
# service avahi-daemon start 
# service netatalk start
